Seeking Professional Help – Have You Been Compliant?

In addition to your other treatments – medications, physical therapy and/or chiropractic treatments, ice and heat, salves, patches and creams – have you tried stopping the behaviors that lead you to the state of dysfunction which includes persistent pain and discomfort? This assumes the conditions are not auto-immune based or a random injury such as a fall or car accident. Although recovery from these and similar conditions still includes the patient’s compliance and efforts.

By changing injurious behaviors we could include:

Eliminating poor postural alignment at work (like at a computer desk) or when lifting objects

Increasing time for (or starting) a therapeutic exercise program

Changing dietary habits to take additional strain on joints and muscles by losing excess weight

Changing the diet to one which promotes less acid in the metabolism to reduce inflammation at it’s source.

The available list of changes and additions a well trained professional can guide the patient to continues on. Have they done any or all of this list or other work to fully aid in recovery?

Challenges of Complimentary / Alternative Medicine (C.A.M.) Providers

“I tried everything – and now I am coming to Complimentary/ Alternative Medicine. I’m fatigued personally and spiritually, been in pain for a while and have financial fatigue from the cost of co-pays for office visits, treatments, gasoline and time off from work. I want relief and I want it now. I really don’t have the money for this but I heard that this could help so I’m going to give it a try.”

A little information about the healing process, soft tissue and inflammation. Did your mother – like mine – ever say to you, “You keep making that ugly face long enough and it will stick that way!”?? Well, in fact she was right. Your body is constantly adapting to the stresses put upon it by your daily life – physical, emotional and environmental.

If we hold a postural imbalance long enough the spine or joints will adapt to the new but imbalanced position and literally change at the cellular level. This change will make the position easier to hold and will shorten and thicken the surrounding tissues in joints and muscles. Thus the “ugly face” or painfully imbalanced aberrant position becomes the norm. This system of adaptation accounts for the formation of calluses on your feet or fingers and scar tissue around cuts. The injury site is now “locking in” that stuck position by hardening the tissue and further adding to the inflammatory process causing more pain then more inflammation – on and on.

Now think about the challenge ahead for the Complimentary Medical Provider (such as licensed massage therapists, naturopath physicians, acupuncturists and chiropractors). The longer a person has had an injury or pain pattern the harder it is to help bring healing circulation to those rigid and stagnant tissues. To change tissue (such as muscle fibers, tendons, ligaments, nerves and joint capsules) takes manipulations, movement and time.

We Welcome You With Open Arms

As C.A.M. Providers we have to believe that “the cup is at least half full and can be filled up”. If I am in the profession of assisted healing I had better believe in the power of change – because if I don’t, I’m in the WRONG business. I have to believe in the power of my work even if the average consumer doesn’t. In fact, I have to believe that the techniques and methods that for thousands of years of history have helped to create healing change in others can help you. We have to believe it even when patients don’t or are not sure when they come into our offices for the first time. We have to inspire that fatigued, doubtful and reluctant patient to take the work and stay on the program.

Unlike some techniques, soft tissue specialists help abate the pain immediately through manipulations. We suggest home remedies to further reduce pain and inflammation. We consider the patient’s state of mind and what they may be ready to hear and what they may be ready to do to take action for their own health.

But we were waiting for the patient with open arms. We wish they had come to us first or sooner. A s we now know, the longer a condition exists the more difficult the return to health can be. As C.A.M. providers we have the burden of being cash fee for service providers. That is, the patient must pay out of pocket for our services, causing more reluctance and doubt. Then we welcome them back for future sessions to further the process of recovery and healing. We can tailor our conversations and actions to the patient’s needs each time. We are always under the pressure of time and financial constraints.

A well trained and experienced Soft Tissue Therapist can provide patients with relief and an action plan for recovery. We combine a multi-disciplined approach including manipulations, home remedies, simple diet coaching and more. As C.A.M. providers we may combine a program patients can get nowhere else. We often provide results when others do not. Most certainly we need your support.

You are not broken. You were probably just seeing the wrong people.

Now, who’s ready for some change?

I cannot tell you the number of people I have talked with in the past 10 years in my career as an “Assisted Healer” or a Soft Tissue Specialist and expert in natural pain relief. I can tell you that I get my business cards printed in 500 and 1000 card batches. I pass out about 300-500 cards a year and have that many or more conversations about my work annually.

That are a lot of conversations with people from all walks of life about pain and dysfunction.

I feel it is accurate to say that a large percentage of my professional time is spent educating the public about the benefits of my work. Educating the public that a remedy or solution exists for their particular malady or personal health goal.

It is with understandable frustration and fatigue that many people have a difficult time hearing my words of coaching and encouragement – that a condition they have suffered with can be alleviated. A person’s condition could include chronic pain, limited range of motion (R.O.M.), nerve compression, chronic inflammation and fatigue, etc. This likely patient has a hard time imagining how a Soft-Tissue Therapist with ‘advanced training’ could be successful a helping them with a condition that they have suffered with for some time. Especially when other health care professionals were not able to create relief.

“But, I’ve tried everything, and nothing works.”

That sentence has come up again and again in the few thousand conversations I’ve had with potential patients.

Usually this means that the person has been to an Allopathic (M.D.) primary care provider to report their pain and dysfunction. Course of treatment may have included pain relieving meds, anti-inflammatory prescriptions (or injections like cortizone), ice and heat and of course rest. All can be useful, especially for mild and acute conditions.

A more in-depth course of treatment may include physical therapy appointments (any number and duration) for more ice and heat and some postural awareness for muscle tone and balance training. This can be effective if the patient is ready to hear the coaching from the P.T. professional and if the patient is compliant. This first assumes that a person has medical insurance that covers therapies and can afford co-pays and time to go to said appointments.

One thing many practitioners can tell you is people in pain are often short tempered and often not compliant with their therapy program. Patients want relief now and expect results and soon. This all disregarding how long the patient has let the problem go on before seeking professional help.

Article continues in “Your Are Not Broken (Part 2 of 2)” for more information on conditions and action plans. Please read on!

As I continue to develop personally and approach the tenth year anniversary from my training in Therapeutic Massage and related manipulations (graduation date July 2000), I look to further define the place of my work.

The topics of- massage clubs ,”Why licensed massage isn’t covered by insurance as a ‘stand alone’ therapy” and “How do I feel about this or the other type of practitioner?” – are very common in my daily experience.

The advent of “massage clubs” across the nation through clever marketing, the power of corporate buying and the increasing need of the American population to relieve our ever elevating physical and mental stress has had at least a three-fold result:

1) Clubs provide much needed work for the graduates of schools of massage and existing licensed massage therapists
2) More people whom would not ever have taken a massage are enjoying the benefits of therapeutic bodywork (from convenient locations and gift certificates)
3) The concept of “taking a massage as a luxury or just for relaxation” has either been reinforced or dispelled by those same hard working therapists and massage clinic operators

The fact that for a few dollars a person can get another educated human being to spend 50 minutes focusing on them and sincerely attempt to make the customer “feel better” is little short of amazing. Where else can you get that effort? Try getting a loved one or co-worker to give you an uninterrupted hour “all about you” and see what you get. What modern humans will do to get a sense of belonging, companionship and to be recognized (social media, clubs, church, etc) is the topic of another article.

My concern is massage clubs may be having the “Wal-Mart” effect on therapeutic bodywork, artificially driving down the rate for labor of therapeutic bodywork and related manipulations. Remember that the $29.00 fee can only be split so many ways. The therapists there are typically paid $14-$16 per therapy hour worked. Their status as IRS Form 1099 subcontractors make them wholly responsible to pay all taxes. Take home pay averages $7-$9. No Workman’s Compensation coverage. No health care insurance. No hourly pay for when they are at work and not providing treatments.

What other form of proven health care pays as little? If the public wants skilled labor and true expertise in relieving pain and suffering, then shouldn’t they be willing to pay professional rates for that same work?

Think of auto repair or home maintenance. If all you need is your oil changed, then a minimally trained oil technician can do that work for $19.95 in 15 minutes. If you need a transmission rebuild will you take your car to the “Oil and Lube Guy”? Not likely. If you need a light bulb changed or touch up paint, call a lightly skilled handyman. If you need your home’s foundation rebuilt, would you call the “Handyman”?

The foundation of your home is an apt analogy. The alignment of your spine and the free moving balance of your neuro-muscular system is an indisputable foundation of your health. More hours are lost from work in the American workforce due to musculo-skeletal pain (causing neck/shoulder spasm and headache, etc.) than for any other reason besides “colds” and flu.

So why do we look at these trained professionals (licensed massage therapists) skilled in alleviating the causes and symptoms of pain as if they are as common as the “Oil and Lube Guy”? Why should they struggle to make a solid living if they are truly part of the health care system of the United States? This brings me to the second topic, “Why isn’t therapeutic massage from state licensed therapists covered by health care insurance?”.

In certain states in the U.S. licensed massage therapists are allowed to directly bill and be reimbursed from health insurance plans such as Blue Cross, Aetna, etc. Arizona is not one of those states. I am on a PPO (Preferred Provider Organization) provider list for retired state employees from the state of Washington now living in AZ. Why don’t more health insurance companies in more states allow licensed therapists to bill directly for their work? The difference is what the buying public values.

If more customers of health insurance companies insisted on a specific coverage, then it would be added. But if we think of soft tissue therapies as just for luxury or relaxation – and not as a valuable and proven form of health care – then it stays in the realm of entertainment and not health care.

The professional organizations like the AMTA (American Massage Therapy Association) have been educating the public and more importantly the state and national legislators on the efficacy and importance of soft tissue manipulations for over 100 years in the U.S. Their assistance has helped to create the guidelines and education requirements for the state of AZ massage board licensees. But why should some of our brightest minds with an intent on being recognized as Complimentary Health Care Providers (including Massage Therapists, Acupuncturists, Nature Pathic Physicians) consider going into a profession that pays them near minimum wage and no workman’s compensation if they are injured on the job?

Why indeed should those same bright minds pay for hundreds or thousands of hours of training at the rate of thousands of dollars to not be valued by the same public they eagerly want to help to better health?

Where is the incentive for existing therapists to continue to have the burdens of:

1) Patient education on the benefits of the work in a cash fee for service environment.
2) Marketing for their businesses.
3) Self-employment taxes.
4) Providing their own health insurance (which ironically would not cover our own type of work – even if it was affordable), etc.?

I cannot provide you with an expensive and fancy advertising campaign or clever branding. I cannot afford to charge artificially low rates for assisted healing. But I do bring over ten years of experience and advanced training to my work. I can tell you with confidence that I have helped thousands (no typo.) of individuals to better and long lasting health.

You will feel the results of my work every moment of every day. What I ask in return is you help me retain the value of my work and recognize its importance in your life and those you care about.

Come ready for change. Be prepared to be challenged in your beliefs of how fast and deeply you will heal. When you do heal and get results, tell everyone you can about my work. Be prepared to not be heard, even by those closest to you. Then tell them again.

When you need a handyman, call one. When you need an expert, call me.

Are you ready to make an appointment?

Thai Massage – one of the fastest growing Massage modalities in the field today – a practice that fosters movement, joint mobilization and enhanced body postures.

Scheduled curriculum includes:

Friday 10 – 1 PM – What is Thai Massage?

History, application and modern influences. Principles of body mechanics, connection and how to heal your body.

Friday 2 – 5 PM – The Lower Body

A step by step routine that opens the energy from the feet up to the hips – sitting in chairs, walking on two legs, and general life patterns leave our hips stuck together. Thai Massage explores a new rotation in the mid body.

Saturday 10 – 1 PM – Modern Concept in an Ancient Modality: BMT, Joint Pumping and Pin & Stretch.

Body posture, applications for therapist, how to adapt the practice to traditional Western Table massage.

Saturday 2-5 PM – The Upper Body

Opening the upper body, back, shoulders and the Thailand Cobra – to be lifted by another is to experience freedom. How do we let go and surrender to the universe? You will discover how to unwind, unplug and connect to your true source.

Sunday 10 – 1 PM – Sitting

Thailand’s ‘Navasana’ – the boat to exhilaration – our heart gets closed from years of strain, our chest collapses and our shoulder round forward. You will learn how to set your inner sails, reorganize your shoulders and allow your hearts brightness to burst through. We will explore the relationship between shoulder rotation and defying gravity.

Sunday 2 – 5 PM – Tying It All Together

How to take the Thai Massage to your daily life and practice – questions and answers revealed, how to apply the postures, with whom and how often. Thai Massage is extremely accessible, to be shared with students, friends and any one looking to put a smile on their face.

If you or anyone you know are playing golf or participating in a health regimen that involves workouts and diet control, then Soft Tissue Work is an essential component.

Stretching and Soft Tissue Work:

Lengthen Myofasciae in muscles and joints to increase Range of Motion (ROM) and athletes’ ability to create power.

Increase local and regional circulation of blood and lymph, thereby increasing metabolism to speed recovery.

Improve balance and flexibility of the athlete’s body in relation to gravity.

Anytime you run, lift weights, do pylometrics, yoga or compete in your sport, you are attempting to create change. You improve flexibility, muscle tone, tendon and ligament strength. You are also increasing your body’s Active Intelligence Quotient.

What is your body’s Active Intelligence Quotient?

AIQ is what I call your body’s ability to have dynamic and explosive strength in all activities of your daily life. Even the “exercise” that you don’t think of as strenuous – like lifting your golf bag or your kids into your car or sitting in an airplane seat with lousy support for several hours.

AIQ is a combination of your musculature’s and your nervous system’s ability to hold you upright and together during any activity. AIQ includes the free Range of Motion (ROM) to do each movement with accuracy and power. An important root of this is the freedom of your muscles and joints to slide with and over one another without restrictions.

Lengthening Myofasciae

When an athlete is active for a length of time he will get a “warmed up” feeling – looser and more flexible. Truly he is warmer in temperature and part of that heat generated is the friction of the layers of muscle encased in the myofasciae (“myo” means muscle, “fasciae” is soft connective tissue – think tendons and ligaments) sliding against one another. Myofasciae is thicker and more dense at lower temperatures and more liquid and free at higher temperatures. Movement creates friction – friction creates heat – heat liquefies myofasciae and the athlete feels “warmed up”.

The myofascaie surround every muscle fiber, each muscle group and the bone the muscle attaches to. Like your sock on your foot. The “sock” is the myofasciae the “foot” is the muscle. When you stretch or are stretched by a therapist you are actively lengthening myofasciae layers and fibers – not the muscles!

Soft tissue specialists such as Rolf Method Practitioners have advanced knowledge of all the connective tissue layers and how they relate to one another. We also know how and where the layers often get stuck together. This sticking restricts ROM and limits the athlete’s ability to generate precise and explosive power. The sticking and binding of the layers hold in inflammation, increasing the “painful” feeling in a joint or muscle. This sticking changes the athlete’s pattern of movement to one which holds the pattern of tears and strains of old injuries limiting him from perfecting technique (like improving a golf swing or tennis swing, running for distance and cycling).

By manipulating tissue we lengthen and free layers from one another and actively change the ability of the blood vessels like arteries to bring fresh blood to the muscle cells you are working so hard to grow and improve.

In the last few years, I have been lucky enough to help create a significant impact on the lives of several children with Cerebral Palsy.

As a specialist Rolf Method Practitioner, I am concerned with manipulating the connective tissue (myofasciae) of my patients. This soft tissue manipulation is extremely effective for people with limited ability to walk, stand and sit with a normal gait and posture due to chronic spasm and shortening in their musculature.

My approach to helping children with CP is to assess their ranges of motion of their limbs and ability to walk and balance in gravity. Then I set to work – a layer at a time – on their soft tissue to relieve the spasm in muscles and lengthen out all significant tissue surrounding their joints (including spine, knees, elbows, etc.).

By earning their trust and cooperation, I am able to help my patients move past their existing level of discomfort to greater freedom and increased ability to balance equally on both feet. The unnaturally twisted tissue of the usual hand and foot combination of the patient responds quickly and often dramatically to the work. By increasing the circulation of blood and lymph fluid to the immediate area and gently lengthening the myofasciae, the patients show an ability to move with normalcy previously unattainable.

Children enjoy the work as they know it is helping them. They realize they not only feel better, but they are better. Traditional treatments of stretch and strengthen are often limited in their effectiveness and are frequently very painful, as the other practitioners will force stuck joints and muscles into lengthening without increasing the quality of the tissue first. Newer (Botox, high frequency stimulation, etc.) and traditional PT treatments can be helpful but lack the specific manipulations which have proven to be so effective for my patients.

In addition to soft tissue treatment, Rolf Method Practitioners empower their patients to move in more efficient and balanced ways. I will provide the patients with homework stretching and postural awareness exercise programs to keep them getting better between each session. Sometimes the greatest challenge is getting the patients to move in the powerfully different and better way their “new body” can – to break the old habits of movement. Whether as a stand-alone therapy or in cooperation with well-educated PT’s and Physicians, soft tissue manipulation provides remarkable results.

Soft Tissue Success Where Traditional PT and Chiro Care Alone Struggles

People often wonder how Soft Tissue specialists (LMT’s or Rolf Method practitioners) have been successful in rehabilitating patients with severe injuries, post surgery complications or chronic pain where others were not.

The condition of a person’s soft tissue – muscles and connective tissue (think of: tendons, ligaments and joint capsules of knees and spine, etc.) after or before a major event are often shortened and tough. This lack of movement in those layers reduces circulation (or is “ischemic”) of blood and lymph fluid at the injury site and the surrounding area so it will not respond to standard stretch and strengthen techniques offered at other offices.

What is Myofasciae?

“Myo” means muscle, “fasciae” means connective tissue. Think of your sock and your foot. Myofasciae is the sock and your foot would be the muscle or bone. When a patient comes to a well trained Myofascial Practitioner, we also see the imbalances in spine, joints or muscle tone but we will – a layer at a time – relieve compression and shortening by using hands, knees and elbows to bring new circulation to damaged tissue thereby accelerating Patient’s healing process many fold.

Whether as a complete stand alone therapy, or in cooperation with well educated Physical Therapists or Chiropractic Physicians, soft tissue manipulation relieves pain, accelerates healing and helps keep Patient compliant with his or her recovery program.
